Crete & Santorini - Mikes Holiday Photos. A future fly out?Thursday 21st - Monday 25th April 2016. Now I'm not one to normally bore you guys with my holiday snaps but I finally managed to fulfil an ambition to do some flying in the Greek Islands with a view to seeing the procedures and practicalities for a future fly-out. Not many of the islands have AvGas which is probably why George who owns the Cessna 172 I hired has a JETA1 conversion. After some training on the diesel water cooled engine with Thielert controls and a check flight I was given the keys to the Greek registered aircraft. I managed to get stuck in Santorini for one more night than planned due to 40+ mph winds which also cancelled the commercial flights, so 18 knots crosswind the following day for departure seemed a breeze, but there are worse places to be stuck! The low level trip round Oia, one of the most photographed locations of all of the Greek islands, was just spectacular, one of those "I can't believe they let me do this" moments!
